The Masterchef Pinoy Edition Finale: The Live Cook-off happened February 9 at the SM Skydome. JR Royol, the 'Rakistang Kusinero of Benguet' was hailed as the very first Pinoy Masterchef grand winner.

JR, who presented a dish reflective of his Bicolano and Igorot roots, beat Carla Marcaida and Ivory Yat during the live cook-off on which they were given 30 minutes to cook and plate their dishes.

Myra Santos was eliminated before the live cook off and was hailed as the 4th placer. After the cook-off, Ivory emerged as the third placer while Carla was on second place and runner up to eventual champion, JR.

The first ever Pinoy MasterChef was determined by Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo and Chef Ferns, Chef Lau, and Chef Jayps who sampled their dishes live, with Queen of All Media Kris Aquino and Kapamilya actor Richard Gomez sitting as judges.

Based on the scores given by the celebrity judges, JR got the highest with an average of 98 (99 and 97 from Kris and Richard, respectively) followed by Carla with 96 points and Ivory with 93.5. ABS-CBN, Philippine Leader in Adapting Global TV Formats

ABS-CBN Corporation, the Philippines’ largest and leading conglomerate, has successfully launched the local versions of three global TV formats, Shine International’s “MasterChef” and “Minute to Win It,” and Endemol’s “Deal or No Deal.”

“MasterChef Pinoy Edition,” hosted by award-winning actress Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo, started airing in November 2012 in the channel’s morning timeslot to consistently high ratings. ABS-CBN gave the hit cooking reality show a Filipino flavor by dubbing it a kusina serye (kitchen series) highlighting the real-life struggles and triumphs of the aspiring cooks who come from different generations, places, and economic backgrounds.

The kusina serye runs back-to-back with widely popular game show “Minute to Win,” solidifying the viewership of ABS-CBN’s morning block. “Minute to Win It,” hosted by actor-VJ Luis Manzano, came out in mid-January and has regularly placed on the list of the top 10 most-watched weekday programs in the Philippines. The show has triggered a wave of excitement among audiences who root for players carrying out misleadingly easy challenges. Its first weeks have also had the country’s most popular celebrities play and will soon feature regular contestants from the tryouts.

This Philippines’ highest rating game show in 2012 was also a hit franchise produced by ABS-CBN. The fourth season of “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal,” which banks on host Luis Manzano’s fresh hosting style and engaging interaction with players, ended up as last year’s top 8th most watched program in urban and rural homes nationwide, with a national TV rating of 25%, based on data from Kantar Media. Launched on Philippine TV in 2006, “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” has set itself apart from the other versions of Endemol format because of its unique elements such as the dancing 24K girls, the signature hand gestures signifying ‘deal’ and ‘no deal,’ and an energetic and interactive audience. The program was so outstanding that it was chosen as one of the only three countries to be part of USA’s “Deal or No Deal – Around the World” edition in 2008.

This year, meanwhile, ABS-CBN is set to release local versions of hit reality shows to give Filipinos a platform to reach their dreams. ABS-CBN continues to discover world-class acts in the fourth season of Fremantle’s “Pilipinas Got Talent,” which is set to debut early this year. Production is also underway for “The Biggest Loser Doubles,” to be hosted by acclaimed actress Iza Calzado, the second local edition of the Shine International format. Nationwide auditions, meanwhile, have already begun for the Philippine debut of singing competition “The Voice of the Philippines,” licensed by Talpa Media Group. In the next few weeks, ABS-CBN will announce the judges for its first season.

Masterchef Pinoy Edition Finale: The Live Cook Off this February 9 at SM Skydome

Posted on February 6, 2013 | 4:15 PM

The Final Four cooks Carla, Ivory, JR, and Myra will face head-to-head in their live and final cooking challenge in MasterChef Pinoy Edition: The Live Cook-off this Saturday (Feb 9), 10 AM at the SM North Edsa Skydome.

Masterchef Pinoy Edition Final 4 cooks

The first ever Pinoy MasterChef will finally be determined by Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo and Chef Ferns, Chef Lau, and Chef Jayps who will be sampling their dishes live, with Queen of All Media Kris Aquino and Kapamilya actor Richard Gomez sitting as judges to help them decide who among the country’s best home cooks is the most deserving to win the title.

With months of training in the MasterChef kitchen, the Final Four cooks have not only acquired new culinary skills but also confidence to succeed for themselves and their families.

“I can say that my determination and love for cooking have nurtured me to become a better cook. I’m not a perfectly skilled and knowledgeable cook but I have the biggest heart among all the contenders in the show,” said JR, the Rakistang Kusinero of Benguet.

Carla, the eldest in the group at 40, is confident that her years of experience as a home cook and a housewife will lead her to the top. ”I’m older than all of them and I’ve been a home cook for a very long time. I’ve used ingredients they never used before. I also know basic cooking techniques they don’t,” quipped the Negosyanteng Kusinera of Bulacan.

The Chef Accountant of Muntinlupa Myra also banks on her being a mother but mostly takes pride in her self-discipline. “I’m more experienced than them—that disciplined me and molded me into a better person in real life and in the kitchen. Being a good chef isn’t just about talent and skills; more importantly, it’s the right attitude that matters,” she said.

Not to be left out is Ivory, the Kusina Fashionista of Quezon City, who boasts of her knowledge of the different cuisines in the world. She said, “My edge over them is I know all the cuisines of the world. I want to raise the standards of Filipino cuisine, not only the classic adobo, kare-kare, or pinakbet. I want to inspire Filipinos to travel the world through food.”

Despite their searing determination to edge out each other, they said they will use their MasterChef experience to fulfill their ambitions, whether they win or lose. Being a part of the kusina serye, they said, is a priceless experience they will treasure in their lifetime.

JR shared that he has already resigned from his job in order to focus on cooking and study professionally. Carla, meanwhile, wants to expand her home cooking business she is known for in their neighborhood.

Putting up a restaurant has always been the ultimate dream of Myra and Ivory, who both admitted they “got off course” from their dream of becoming a chef. Myra was forced to take up accountancy because it was the most convenient career choice for her family, while Ivory is a nurse who had initially pursued to become a doctor to follow her parents’ wishes.

The first ever Pinoy MasterChef will win P1 million from Clara Oil, a kitchen showcase from Whirlpool, and a Diploma Program for Professional Culinary Arts scholarship at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.

The second, third, and fourth placers will win P500,000, P300,000, and P200,000 respectively. They will each get a kitchen package from Fujidenzo and a scholarship at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.

Masterchef Pinoy Edition Finale: Live Cook-off Set on February 9

Posted on January 25, 2013 | 1:34 PM

Seven cooks remain to face the toughest battle of their lives and the ultimate showdown for culinary supremacy in ABS-CBN’s top-rating kusina serye MasterChef Pinoy Edition.
Masterchef Pinoy Edition Top 7 cooks

Three weeks before the grand finale titled MasterChef Pinoy Edition: The Live Cook-off set on February 9, the Top 7 cooks are set to conquer daunting challenges to prove their worth to host Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo, Chef Ferns, Chef Lau, and Chef Jayps.

Carla, the Negosyante Kusinera of Bulacan has come a long way from being a home cook who thought she could only cook for her family and friends.  In the MasterChef cooking arena, she has proven to be one of the strongest contenders for her traditional dishes with a twist like sinigang na lechon kawali and pusit stuffed with Bicol Express.

Ivory’s flamboyant character reflects her dishes that seem as interesting as the headdresses she wears on the show. Admittedly inexperienced in cooking Filipino food, the Kusina Fashionista of Quezon City uses her experience of traveling to different countries by adding an extra punch to her dishes such as Caribbean embutido.

Another standout personality is JR, the Rakistang Kusinero of Benguet who has gained a bold competitive reputation when he spoke against wildcard contestant Sonny Boy joining the competition again. JR’s aggressiveness was evident in the special Christmas challenge, one of the few individual challenges he won in the kusina serye.

Unlike JR, the Chef Accountant of Muntinlupa Myra is a silent but worthy competitor as proven by the judges’ positive comments on her dishes. Her fellow cooks see her as a reliable team member who has an extraordinary flair for desserts.

While Reggie always gets dumped by girls, he can always turn his heartbreak into culinary genius. An early frontrunner in the show, the Romantic Kusinero of Laguna is one of the MasterChef cooks with the most number of top dishes, including bibingka deluxe, Pinoy-style shawarma, and longganisa sweet curry. Will he prevail until the very end?

From a humble living in the province, Ronnel is especially skilled in preparing classic Pinoy dishes. Despite his knack for inventing new and unusual dishes, the Boy Labong of Pampanga can whip up a simple yet outstanding dish like a tasty serving of nachos which he prepared and was named the top dish in one of the kusina serye’s challenges.

Meanwhile, Sonny Boy kept his fighting spirit burning after being eliminated early in the show and made a solid comeback as a wildcard contestant. Aside from his famous darak cookies, the Darak King of Bataan also made history when he became the first MasterChef cook to prepare the top dishes in two consecutive challenges.

Don’t miss the last three weeks of Masterchef Pinoy Edition as the Top 7 cooks fight their way to the top to become the first ever Pinoy MasterChef and win P1 million.

Masterchef Pinoy Edition airs Mondays through Fridays, 10:15AM, before Minute To Win It on ABS-CBN and Saturdays, 10AM, before Be Careful With My Heart: Saturday Rewind. For updates on the program, likewww.facebook.com/MasterChefPH, follow @MasterChefPHL on Twitter, or visit www.masterchefph.tv.

Masterchef Pinoy Edition Top 14 Cooks Live in One House, Up for a Tougher Battle

Posted on December 7, 2012 | 8:29 AM

Anationwide search has brought together the best 14 cooks from different backgrounds and ages who are gearing up for a tougher culinary competition with eyes on the same prize: becoming the first ever Pinoy MasterChef.

Masterchef Pinoy Edition Top 14 Cooks
The road to the crown and the P1 million grand prize has officially begun for the top 14 cooks of MasterChef Pinoy Edition who, from now on, will be living in a single house. Who among them will get along well? Who will stand out?

Making the cut is Betty, the Loyal Kusinera of Cebu, who has been working as a house help since she was 18 to provide for her siblings and take them to school. Her employers, who have treated her as family for 15 years now, have been enthusiastic about her stint in the kusina-serye.

Carla, the Negosyante Kusinera of Bulacan, married at such a young age that she needed to learn how to cook for her family. She refined her skills in the kitchen and eventually began accepting orders from friends to prepare crispy pata and roast chicken, which are both her specialties.

Next on the list is Cons, the Kitchen Siren of San Juan, who once auditioned in Pinoy Dream Academy to become a recording artist. A disease, however, damaged her voice and deterred her from reaching her dreams. This set off her love affair with cooking and has since then vowed to master cooking.

The Biba Kusinera of Davao, Gian, has struggled with his own insecurities and his family’s expectations from him as the first born son. Gian, who is also the youngest finalist in the competition at 20, grew up believing his father never approved of him because of his homosexuality.

Ivory, a nurse, has always been pushed by her parents to become a doctor. Her love for cooking proved potent enough that she abandoned the medical field to pursue her culinary passion.

For band vocalist JR, winning the Pinoy MasterChef title also means winning his dream wedding with his girlfriend. The Rakistang Kusinero of Benguet also wants to use the cash prize to support his child from a former partner whom he has not seen in years.

Lilibeth has struggled to make ends meet as a housemaid ever since she separated from her live-in partner and the father of her two children. She joined the kusina-serye to provide a better life for her and her family.

Also striving to work hard for his family is Mac, the Kitchen Mac-Kulit of Tarlac, whose marriage and relationship with his children ultimately suffered while he worked as a seaman abroad. Now separated from his wife, Mac has returned home for good to take care of his kids.

Maureen, the Loving Nanay of Kusina, joined MasterChef to help in paying for her two kids’ medical bills. Both of them suffer from G6PD, a fatal disease that could cause hemorrhage to an affected person who eats certain foods he is allergic to. Maureen’s husband is their family’s sole breadwinner as she intends to look after the kids.

Melissa, 51, is the oldest among the finalists and is regarded by the group as their mother figure. Will the considerate Cooking Momma give way to others or will she fight for the grand prize until the end?

Also pulling out all the stops to become the first ever Pinoy MasterChef is Myra, a working class mom who wants to be recognized as an excellent cook. The Chef Accountant of Muntinlupa first worked her way around the kitchen when she was still little and cooked for her siblings and parents.

Also entering the Top 14 is Reggie, the Romantic Kusinero of Laguna, who admits he always gets dumped by girls. He says that he wants a girlfriend who is not so good at cooking so he could satiate her with his dishes and love.

Ronnel, meanwhile, grows vegetables in his backyard and cooks over an open fire using twigs. The Boy Labong of Pampanga’s family survives on income from his humble sari-sari store business.

Sorsogon’s Chief Cook of Police, Tolits, wanted to take up Fine Arts in college but was not able to because his family couldn’t afford it, and it was only in cooking where could express his passion for art. He eventually joined the police force and now aspires to put up a small restaurant to support his family.
